Help create more permanent, loving homes for children and Save ...

Since 1997, the adoption tax credit has helped tens of thousands of parents offset the high cost of adoption, making it possible for them to provide children with loving, permanent families - the?adoption tax credit is set to expire on December 31, 2012.

Whether you have been fortunate to access the credit on your own adoption journey,?hope to access the credit in the future or simply care about continuing to?create more homes for children in need,?you can help save the adoption tax credit by writing or emailing your member of congress and telling him/her why saving the adoption tax credit is?important - tell congress why you care because your members of congress value your voice!

Congress must act now to pass legislation that will protect and extend the adoption tax credit and encourage the right of every child to grow up safe and loved in a family of their own. You can find your Representative and Senators? contact information by visiting:

www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm or www.house.gov/representatives.

On April 17, Representative Bruce Braley introduced the Making Adoption Affordable Act (HR 4373). If you are contacting your Representative?s office, ask your Representative to become a co-sponsor of HR 4373. There is no companion legislation in the Senate yet, so you can simply ask your Senators to support an adoption tax credit that is inclusive, refundable, flat for special needs adoptions, and permanent.

If Congress does not take action, the current adoption tax credit will expire at the end of 2012. The credit will be reduced to $6,000, and will only benefit the few families that adopt children with special needs and have qualified adoption expenses. Most families adopting children from foster care, intercountry adoption, and domestic infant adoption will not receive any benefit. Without the adoption tax credit, many parents hoping to adopt will be unable to do so, and others will face great financial hardship. The adoption tax credit is essential to ensuring that as many children as possible find the forever families they deserve and ensuring that those families are in a more stable financial position to provide an environment where children can thrive.

The adoption tax credit must be extended to help as many children as possible find the permanent, loving family they need and deserve. And for 2012 it should be made refundable again so that most adoptive families will benefit from it. The best adoption tax credit would be permanent, refundable, inclusive of all types of adoption, and remain a ?flat? tax for children with special needs.

On behalf of the countless children waiting to be adopted, and the many thousands of families that stand to benefit from the adoption tax credit, please take action on this important issue. To make this task?even easier, you can find sample emails/letters/op-eds at http://adoptiontaxcredit.org/advocate/

Thank you!

Chicago Clean Energy Project Offers Strong Consumer Benefits

Project will protect Illinois consumers from volatile gas prices, saving at least $100 million

CHICAGO, July 31, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --?Chicago Clean Energy, a $3 billion state-of-the-art gasification project proposed for the Chicago's southeast side, will offer unmatched protections to Illinois consumers, including a guaranteed $100 million in savings over the life of the project for ratepayers and an innovative revenue sharing system that will provide rebates to consumers.

"Working with Governor Quinn, the Citizens Utility Board and others, we were able to include a number of protections in the project's authorizing legislation when it was approved in 2011," said Hoyt Hudson, project manager for Chicago Clean Energy. "The project's success is tied directly to producing savings for consumers."

In addition to the $100 million in required savings, state law also includes a 2 percent annual rate cap to protect against rate increase ? the same structure that governs wind and solar projects in the state ? and a $1.5?billion consumer protection reserve account that were both added as a result of feedback from Governor Quinn and consumer advocates.

"Under 48 different natural gas price projections issued by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Chicago Clean Energy was shown to save consumers money," noted Hudson. "The potential cost to consumers in a given month was shown to be limited to 33 cents, with no limit to potential savings."

The Illinois Power Agency oversaw a $10 million state-sponsored study that demonstrated that the Chicago Clean Energy project is likely to save consumers over $1.2 billion. The pricing structure established by the existing law includes a number of built-in consumer protections that are especially effective in lowering the impact of damaging price spikes in the natural gas market.

"In addition to helping launch a cutting-edge technology in Illinois, this project is required to share all profits from natural gas sales and ancillary product sales with Illinois consumers through rebates," said Hudson.

The Chicago Clean Energy project has been thoroughly vetted by the Illinois General Assembly over a five-year process, passing four pieces of legislation, each of which passed both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly by wide margins with strong statewide support from both political parties. Senate Bill 3766, a pending bill that clarifies final contracting details for the plant, is awaiting Governor Quinn's signature.

"Governor Quinn has been an avid supporter of consumer rights and protections and supported this legislation in July 2011," said Hudson. "We are hopeful he will sign the bill and take a significant step forward for consumer savings, clean energy, jobs, and economic development in Illinois."

"The Chicago Clean Energy project is a win-win for our community," said Sandra Patterson, president of the Cottage Grove Heights Community Coalition. "This major investment will clean up a contaminated area, create jobs and bring a cutting-edge energy technology right to our backyard. I fully support the Chicago Clean Energy project and hope Governor Quinn will too."

About Chicago Clean Energy

Samsung/Apple trial by jury begins today, don?t expect a clear outcome anytime soon

Android Central

Following months of legal wrangling, injunctions and appeals, Samsung and Apple will face off in a federal court in San Jose today. The two companies accuse each other of patent and design infringement, with Apple seeking more than $ 2.5bn in damages, and Samsung looking to claim royalties for five of its own patents.

The narrative is all too familiar ? Apple accuses Samsung of being a "copycat" and imitating its products and inventions rather than inventing its own. Samsung counters that Apple's claims are overly broad, and that its actions are?anti-competitive and monopolistic.

Apple will argue that Samsung has copied its patented designs, and that Samsung's products, in both hardware and software, are "confusingly similar" to the iPhone and iPad. It's a tactic which has been met with some success, notably in the German courts, over the past year. However, it's backfired in the UK, where a High Court judge recently ruled that Samsung did not copy Apple's iPad designs, and ordered Apple to take out ads to this effect.

So we're in for yet more claims and counterclaims, with the certainty of appeals to follow whatever verdicts the court reaches. So strap yourself in, and prepare for endless?back and forth lawyerin' over the coming weeks. As our own Jerry Hildenbrand noted in his recent editorial, this is just the way things have to be in the mobile tech world in 2012. Let's just hope that whatever the decision, it doesn't impact consumers' freedom to choose the phone they want.

Six Degrees of Dreena Burton - Diet, Dessert and Dogs

[This post is part of an ongoing series of interviews with cookbook authors, bloggers, women entrepreneurs and home chefs whose work I enjoy and admire. If you've got someone in mind you'd like me to approach for an interview, please shoot me an email at dietdessertdogsATgmailDOTcom, or leave a comment here and let me know! And now, enjoy today's installment!]

I had no idea when I did my first (joint) interview with Cara of Cara?s Cravings that I?d have so much fun, I?d want to do it again! I love getting to ask questions of some of my foodie friends and others in the culinary realm.

Today?s guest is someone I have admired for a very long time, ever since I bought her first cookbook, The Everyday Vegan.? It was one of the first vegan cookbooks I owned, and it was a bit of a revelation (that tiramisu! those ?neat? balls!).? In the decade since she first shot to fame, Dreena Burton has since developed and maintained her reputation as a consummate recipe creator (her Homestyle Chocolate Chip Cookies are legendary), engaging writer (in her books and now on her blog, Plant Powered Kitchen), fabulous vegan role model and, not least, mom to three growing girls. (Being one of three sisters myself, I cannot imagine how she gets it all done?but she does!)

In fact, when I first thought about publishing a cookbook back in 2008, I contacted Dreena and asked if she?d mind sharing some information with me.? Even though our connection was tenuous at best (someone she knew had taken several of my cooking classes back when I taught them in my home), she graciously agreed?and did so with incredible generosity.? I was over the moon thrilled when she agreed to write a blurb for my book! Although we?ve never actually met in person, Dreena and I have gotten to know each other over the past few years via our blogs, Facebook, and being part of the vegan community. I?m delighted to be able to share a little more about her and her latest book, Let Them Eat Vegan, with you today!

I?m also sharing Dreena?s recipe for Chocolate Coconut-Goji Granola AND giving away a copy of her book!? Skip to the bottom of the post for details.

[The soy-free "Momelet," here filled with "Vegveeta" for a delicious breakfast cheese omelet.]

Let Them Eat Vegan is your 4th book. How have your recipes changed since The Everyday Vegan, your first book, until now?

Well, my recipes have always utilized whole foods, I think I became known as the ?crunchy-granola vegan cookbook author? for many years! ;) ?It?s always been important to me to use plenty of whole foods, and to maximize flavors while minimizing sweeteners and fats. ?With my previous books I did just that, but in my earlier cooking I included some refined flours and also a scattering of recipes with some processed vegan foods (not much, but some). ?Over the years, I evolved more into using whole-grain flours for baking (and wheat-free and gluten-free flours), and also simply using what I call ?the vegan basics? (those beans, nuts, seeds, grains, fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices). ?In Let Them Eat Vegan, I went full-steam-ahead with this concept, and I think this book represents not just how I?ve evolved as a vegan cook, but also represents an evolution in vegan cooking in general ? with an emphasis on non-processed and?minimally processed ingredients.??All of the recipes in Let Them Eat Vegan are made with these ?vegan basics?, for everyday plant-powered eating.??You won?t find any ?white processed stuff? ? no white flour, no white pasta or bread? and also no commercial vegan substitutes like vegan sour cream, mayonnaise, etc.??The recipes are wheat-free and also largely gluten-free, and you?ll also find a sprinkling of raw delights for good measure.

Which recipe in the book would you say is most kid-friendly? Which one would you feed to skeptical omnivores?

Oooh, that?s tough. ?So many are kid-friendly as I make many of these recipes regularly for our family. ?Let?s see, some top picks for ?kid-friendly? are: ?BF Blueberry Muffins,? ?Hempanana Smoothie,, ?Chipotle Avocado Cream? (I know that sounds not very kid-friendly, but I omit the small amount of chipotle and our kids love this!), ?Cheesy Sprinkle? (a fave with our girls for pasta, rice, beans, just about anything!), ?Vegveeta Dip,? ?Almond Roasted Cauliflower,?? ?Mac-Oh Geez?? and many healthy treats too (?Raw Orange Chocolate Pudding,? ?Troll Cookies,? ?Banana Butter Pie? to mention a few!).

Picks for omnis? ?That?s even harder for me to say, but I think some of the dishes that ?wow? omnis so far are the ?No-fu Love Loaf,? ?Panfried Falafels with Quinoa Taboulleh and Smoky Tahini Sauce,? ?Jerk Chickpeas,? and ?Nutty Veggie Burgers.?

[Kale slaw with almond-curry dressing]

You devote an entire chapter in Let Them Eat Vegan to ?Plant-Powered Lunchboxes? and the idea of packing healthy lunches for your vegan kids at school or out of the home. What would you say is the most important piece of advice for moms who are raising their kids as vegans?

I start with my motto that ?kids come to love the foods they know?. ?If you are introducing new foods to your children ? whether vegan or not ? it may take some time. ?My girls wouldn?t want to drink cow?s milk or eat ham sandwiches or string cheese ? all pretty typical school lunch fare. ?It?s not always about the food being vegan, but about the food becoming healthier. ?Working towards eating less processed, whole plant-based foods may take some adjustment for your children. ?But, remember that so many of the foods we eat are already vegan! ?Your children are already eating fruits and vegetables, grains, breads, pastas, and beans and possibly nuts and seeds. ?It?s about eating more of them, and combining them in some pretty fantastic ways! ?Our daughter said to me just the other day ?Really all of our food is regular food ? regular food that people eat anyway? just with no milk or meat!? ?If we can remember that it?s not ?different?? but rather an expansion of what we already know, it becomes far more approachable and acceptable.

And, in terms of school lunches, it?s easier now than ever before for children to eat vegan. ?Not only is the word well known, and convenience products and foods far more available for quick lunch-fixes ? there are so many allergies in schools that teachers and administrators are very accommodating of varying dietary needs. ?Many children are allergic to dairy, and of course many to nuts and peanuts. ?That is the only slight challenge with packing plant-powered lunches, is that just about every school has a ?nut-free? policy. ?Still, there are PLENTY of other choices for packing lunches beyond pb&j (or even almondbutter&j)!

These days, with so many celebrities touting the benefits of veganism, scientific studies, documentaries, and a slew of vegan cookbooks, veganism is positively mainstream. What?s the biggest change you?ve seen in how people view vegan diets, compared to when you first adopted a vegan diet 15 years ago?

As you?ve also surely noticed, being vegan is no longer fringe. ?When I started this journey almost 20 years ago, vegan was largely unknown. ?It felt almost embarrassing to say the word, knowing I would be unfairly judged for its stigma at the time. ? Vegan was ?out there?, it signalled radical and extreme, and even unhealthy? when ironically a whole-foods vegan diet serves to promote health and reduce risks of disease! ?Now, the word vegan is widely known, it?s trendy, and sparks interest and curiosity more so than any negative judgements.

[Raw Carob-Goji Truffles]

Are any of your girls budding chefs as well? If so, what do they like to cook?

Not as much as people might think they would be! ?They like to get in the kitchen with me occasionally, but they have their own very individual interests. ?Our eldest (11 years) loves (loves!) to read and draw, and also play hockey. ?Our middle daughter (7 years) is very musical and loves to sing and dance and has music blaring in the background most of the day! ?And, our ?wee one? (3 years) ? not quite sure where her interests are at this point. ?Maybe she will return the cooking love in years to come.

If you had to eat one food every day for the rest of your life, which food would you choose?

Ice cream. With a side of dark chocolate. ?(And as much as beans and greens sound like a boring answer, they run a close second, I love beans SO much, eat them every day ? and usually in some form in a big green salad!)

[Creamy Eggplant Dip]

The Everyday Vegan was one of the first vegan cookbooks I bought, and I still consult it regularly when I?m looking for reliable recipes that I know I?ll enjoy; you are one of my culinary role models (thanks!).? Who are your role models when it comes to cooking?

That is so lovely to know, Ricki. ?I really appreciate that. ?Some of my early mentors and teachers may not be well known to many of your readers. ?Some were Canadian chefs and cooks that I learned a lot from in their tv shows, and books and more. ?James Barber, ?the urban peasant?; Bonnie Stern, Ken and Mary Jo from What?s for Dinner? ? these chefs taught me some of the basics about using basics! ?Using things like fresh herbs and vegetables, and citrus, and beans ? and even tofu! ?And, one of my first cookbooks was The Moosewood Cookbook by Mollie Katzen ? a classic. ?There are others I still learn from ? not vegan chefs, but chefs that really teach intricacies about flavors and ingredients ? like Bobby Flay and Jamie Oliver.

Thanks so much, Dreena! It was such a pleasure learning more about you, your recipes and your approach to cooking.?

And thanks, too, for letting me share this recipe for Cocoa-Goji Granola.? I loved this cereal (well, duh?chocolate AND goji berries?!).? And unlike most cold cereals, the millet here stayed crunchy right down to the last spoonful (of which there were many). ;)

Cocoa Goji Granola (wheat-free, optionally gluten-free, soy-free)

recipe provided by Dreena Burton, with permission, from Let Them Eat Vegan

This granola is lightly sweetened, rather than sickly sweet as some commercial varieties of granola can be. Full of healthful ingredients, it makes a great snack to eat straight out of your hand! [Ricki's note: yes, it does!! ;) ]

2 1/2 cups????? rolled oats

1/2 cup?????????? dry millet

3/4 cup?????????? hemp seeds

1/4 cup?????????? unsweetened shredded coconut (see note)

3-4 tbsp????????? unrefined sugar [I used coconut sugar; Dreena recommends sucanat? or date sugar as other good choices]

? cup???????????? sunflower seeds (see note)

? cup???????????? cocoa powder

1/2 tsp??????????? cinnamon

1/8 tsp??????????? freshly grated nutmeg

1?4 tsp ??????????? (little scant) sea salt

1/2 cup?????????? brown rice syrup [I used coconut nectar]

3 tbsp???????????? organic extra-virgin coconut oil (at room temperature so softened, see note)

1 tsp??????????????? pure vanilla extract

1/3 ? ? cup??? goji berries (or raisins, see note)

1 tsp??????????????? orange zest

Preheat the oven to 300?F and line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a bowl, combine the rolled oats, dry millet, hemp seeds, coconut, sugar, sunflower seeds, cocoa, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt and stir until well mixed. Add the brown rice syrup, coconut oil, and vanilla and stir well (see note). Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking sheet and spread out to distribute evenly. Bake for 28 to 30 minutes, stirring a couple of times throughout the baking process to ensure the mixture browns evenly. Remove from oven, stir in the goji berries and orange zest, and let cool completely. Serve with cold nondairy milk, and store in an airtight container.

If This Apron Could Talk: If your coconut oil isn?t warmed until liquefied, take a shortcut! Simply toss all ingredients as best you can and transfer to the prepared baking sheet. After 2 to 3 minutes of baking, the oil will have melted. Remove your baking sheet from the oven and now toss everything until well combined. Back into the oven it goes, but do re- member to stir a couple of times again during the total baking time.

Savvy Subs and Adds:

1) Chopped almonds are a natural complement to the orange and cocoa flavors in this granola, so feel free to replace the sunflower seeds (and/or the coconut) with some chopped almonds.

2) Not everyone is fond of goji berries. Feel free to substitute raisins or even cranberries (or combination of both) for the goji berries. Add them at the same time in the recipe, just after removing the granola from the oven.

Suitable for: ACD Stage 3 and beyond, sugar-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, egg free, nut free, vegan.

Video: Civilians flee Aleppo as fighting intensifies

>>> syria's top diplomat here in london defected today criticizing the assad regime on his way out for their crackdown on the rebels that has killed upwards of 20,000 people so far. in syria the fighting goes on, a lot of it over control of the biggest city there, aleppo , the city the size of chicago, illinois, where the rebels have made their stand. we have been able to get a report out again tonight from our chief foreign correspondent richard engel , who is covering the fighting from inside syria .

>> reporter: the government assault on aleppo is strangling the city. u.n. officials say some 200,000 people have fled aleppo in the last two days alone. syrian troops seemed determined to drive the rebels out of this city along with many of its 3 million residents. the rebels are trying to fight back. but the rebels aren't completely defenseless. they filled gas canisters with shrapnel to make their bombs more deadly then spread fertilizer on the floor and add aluminum powder. now it's a dangerous mix. as they fill the canisters with the explosive, tiny, combustible particles float in the air. one spark and it'll all go up. these are crude bombs but as rebel internet videos show they're powerful. yet it's civilians suffering the most here. we've seen government troops shelling civilian areas indiscriminately. this doctor is the only surgeon for 70,000 people. he's trying to stay neutral.

>> we told them to fight only the army not the people. i told the government you must fight the free army only.

>> reporter: the dr. treats dozens of injured a day and bloody gauze on his floor and his medicine cabinet is nearly empty. this mother came today to find her son shot in the head by a government sniper. answer me, answer me, my life, s she wails, but he never did. one more of the some 20,000 killed in a war that appears to be growing more deadly by the day. richard engel , nbc news, northern syria .

Save women, children first? Not likely

Despite the widespread notion that women and children have a better chance at surviving a shipwreck because they will be saved first, a new study finds that that's just wishful thinking.

The captain, crew and male passengers are more likely to survive maritime disasters than women and children, finds a new study by economists at Uppsala University in Sweden.

When it comes to abandoning ship, "it appears as if it's every man for himself," said lead researcher Mikael Elinder in a statement.

Elinder and his colleague studied 18 shipwrecks, including the Titanic and Lusitania, from 1852 to 2011 that involved more than 15,000 passengers and more than 30 nationalities. They limited their study to disasters that included information on the sex of survivors, that involved at least 100 people, and where at least 5 percent survived and 5 percent died.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Mother Nature's Olympians crowned

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: The Olympics is a time to celebrate the world's fastest and strongest humans, but you can rely on conservationists to put the best of human performance in perspective.

    2. Danes set sights on claim to North Pole
    3. A moth with a foot-wide wingspan?!
    4. Antarctic outpost sees season's 1st sunrise

Their findings run counter to the notion that women and children get priority when escaping a shipwreck. The sinking of the Titanic 100 years ago, where three times more women survived than men, popularized this "unwritten law of the sea," because the captain ordered that women and children went into the lifeboats first.

But it turns out that this is the exception rather than the rule. Study co-author Oscar Erixson grew up on stories of chivalrous men on the Titanic who gave their lives for the women and children. "(So) the survival patterns we found (in this study) came as surprise to me," the economist wrote in an email to LiveScience. [ Gallery: Stunning Shots of the Titanic Shipwreck ]

In results published online Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Erixson and Elinder found that overall, women were about half as likely to survive as men. And they found that crew members were about 18.7 percent more likely to survive than passengers, no matter how much time it took a ship to sink.

"The later observation is certainly not what one would expect given that the crew, and the captain in particular, are responsible for evacuating the passengers before putting themselves in safety," Erixson wrote in an email.

The researchers also found that women fared the worst on British ships, despite the fact that more "women and children first" orders were given on British ships than on others.

"Although maritime disasters are tragic events, they can contribute to our understanding of how people behave under extreme stress and when it is a matter of life and death," said Elinder in a statement.

DC Mayor Opposes Chick-fil-A Expansion

WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray says he won't support an expanded presence for Chick-fil-A in the district because the president of the fast-food chain is opposed to gay marriage.

Gray, a Democrat, referred to the company's product as "hate chicken" in a tweet on Friday. His statement referenced his "long-standing strong support for LGBT rights and marriage equality" and followed similar statements by mayors in Boston, Chicago and San Francisco that the company was not welcome.

Chick-fil-A has no immediate plans to expand in the city. Its only physical location is on the campus of The Catholic University. The company also has a food truck in the district.

A Chick-fil-A spokesman says the company has "biblically based principles" but will no longer participate in the debate over same-sex marriage.

Shrinking supply of homes for sale has upended market dynamics ...

The stock of homes listed for purchase has fallen significantly from last summer, in turn raising prices and homeowners' equity stakes and reducing total sales.

WASHINGTON ? Though many home shoppers who assume they are still in a buyer's market find it hard to believe, one of the sobering fundamentals shaping real estate this summer is shrinking inventory: The supply of houses for sale has fallen significantly in most areas compared with a year earlier, sometimes dramatically so. And that is having important side effects by raising prices and homeowners' equity stakes and reducing total sales.

Roleplay partners?

I'm looking for people interested in doing 1x1, informal (chatlog/script or possibly short paragraph style) roleplays. My style is informal, character-driven and spontaneous, and for me the purpose of/emphasis in a roleplay is on making characters, stories and worlds that both people involved are really emotionally invested in.

Currently, I'm on an original roleplay kick, and I really want more places where I can use my original characters, but I'd be willing to do fandom roleplay as well. I'm interested in doing science fiction, fantasy, science fantasy and possibly other speculative fiction genres when it comes to original roleplay.

Fandoms I'm into/would be willing to roleplay in include (but aren't necessarily limited to):
-Homestuck
-A Song of Ice and Fire/A Game of Thrones
-Temeraire
-Babylon 5
-Yu Yu Hakusho
-Avatar (preferably around the time of Legend of Korra, but Last Airbender-era stuff could be fun too)
-Crossovers

Hard limits/Do not want:
-Gore
-Detailed medical scenes
-Explicit sex (I'll do fade-to-black, but that's it)
-Plots that are just or mostly romance (I'm good with pairing characters, even when it's canon character/OC, but I like it to be part of a larger plot).

Things I like and/or do (besides making lists, apparently...):
-Large casts of characters
-Multiple plots/subplots going on at once
-Mood whiplash, or at least things being able to be really intensely good and then incredibly sad later if not both at once
-Stories being dark and serious some or a lot of the time without being grimdark
-Taking a canon world beyond the source material, doing stuff with things that are left just implied or completely unaddressed
-Making a character by using a few tropes or other characters as bases, throwing them into a situation and seeing how they deal with it
-Talking over potential character and story stuff (or just squeeing) with the other roleplayer in a collaborative, non-criticism-based way outside of game

I have a few ideas for premises for roleplays, and a few original characters that I can adapt for different settings, that I'll talk more about with people who are interested. I hope to hear from you. Thanks for reading all of this!

"Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you." -Tyrion Lannister, A Song of Ice and Fire

Snoop Dogg denied Norway entry for 2 years for pot

OSLO, Norway (AP) ? A lawyer representing Snoop Dogg says the American rapper has been banned from entering Norway for two years after trying to enter the country with a small amount of marijuana last month.

Holger Hagesaeter, the rapper's legal representative in Norway, told The Associated Press on Saturday that his client "can live with the decision" and has no immediate plans to appeal it.

Snoop Dogg, whose name is Calvin Broadus, was on his way to a music festival in southern Norway in June when sniffer dogs detected eight grams of marijuana in his luggage. He was also carrying more cash than is legally allowed and was fined 52,000 kroner ($8,600) after admitting to the two offenses, the lawyer said.

Discover Money Saving Auto Insurance Tips And Tricks | All About ...

?Piece of mind? is the thought behind insurance. Sometimes it goes beyond that. The law may require a certain amount of coverage to avoid penalties. This is true of auto insurance. How can you make a wise decision regarding car insurance? Read the following article for some handy tips to do just that!

Luckily, you will find everything you need to know right here. Read on for more.

If you are aiming to get affordable auto insurance, you should know your financing requirements. If you finance your vehicle, you may have more requirements set by the financing company that you have to maintain. This will likely affect the amount of your deductible, so you should know these requirements before raising your deductible.

Car Insurance Quotes

Get between 3-5 car insurance quotes before deciding on a company. This will allow you to see what the acceptable range is for the type of policy that you want. You can easily identify if one company is charging too much for their services and also if another is offering you a good deal.

Look at your driving record before you get a car insurance quote. It may be inaccurate and contain old information that does not apply to your current situation. This can lead to elevated car insurance quotes and cost you a substantial amount of money. Make sure that your driving record has correct information.

Insurance Quotes

Every year when your automotive insurance is up for renewal, shop around to check that the premium being paid is still market competitive. There are an abundance of internet facilities available where you can enter the vehicle details online and immediately receive insurance quotes from various companies. This will confirm or deny that your current premium is realistic. Be sure to shop around and gather multiple insurance quotes. This way you can be sure that you are not getting ripped off and getting the best possible coverage for the price. Taking time to examine different companies? prices can save a whole lot of trouble.

Finding cheaper auto insurance is as easy as requesting insurance quotes. Requesting just one quote may not do the trick, but if you request several quotes online, you will probably find a substantial variance in the rates quoted by different providers. Even with exactly the same information about you and your driving history, every insurer looks at you a little differently. Certain insurers place more weight on factors such as your age or the car you drive. You could be just a few quotes away from saving a lot of money on your car insurance.

Auto Insurance

When looking for auto insurance, your need to comparison shop. It is always important to shop around and compare different insurance companies, as this could end up saving you hundreds of dollars a year. Certain companies will offer a deep discount to someone with a good driving record or someone with current auto insurance who is prepared to switch companies.

Do your homework and always let the insurance company know what others have offered you. They may be prepared to negotiate in order to get your business.

Another way to lower your auto insurance policy premium is by taking good care of your credit. Good credit is good when it comes to your auto insurance. By keeping your credit rating healthy, it may be considered by some insurers when they are setting rates for your auto policy.

Sifting through a sea of information is not easy, as discussed at the beginning of this article. Now that you have read the great advice here, you can go forward with confidence about what you have learned. Refer to this auto insurance information anytime you need to refresh the concepts discussed here.

Access more information, resources and tips on car insurance that you ought to know before buying one.

Obama budget office lowers economic forecast

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton listens at left as President Barack Obama speaks to members of the media??

President Barack Obama's budget office on Friday revised downward its previous forecasts for economic growth in 2012 and 2013 and projected a $1.211 trillion deficit through the end of the year, slightly down from earlier predictions.

"The economy is not growing fast enough and there are still too many people out of work. Most troubling, the pace of improvement in the labor market slowed in the second quarter of this year," according to the Mid-Session Review (MSR) from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Obama's hopes for re-election hang on voters' perceptions of how he has handled the economy, which is still sputtering three and a half years after he took office. Polls show Republican challenger Mitt Romney is seen as a better candidate for creating jobs, though the president outscores him on which candidate would be a better champion for the middle class.

The MSR cut projected growth from 2.7 percent to 2.3 percent in 2012 and 2.7 percent from 3 percent relative to its previous forecasts in February. That came after the Commerce Department reported that the gross domestic product rose at a 1.5 percent annualized rate in the second quarter of the year, a tepid pace.?On the deficit, the new $1.211 trillion figure was below February forecasts of $1.327 trillion. But the MSR upped its estimate for the deficit in 2013 from $901 billion to $991 billion. Republicans led by Romney have cited the country's swelling national debt?now at nearly $16 trillion?as a symptom of Obama's mismanagement of the economy. The Democratic incumbent has emphasized that the 2007-2008 economic meltdown is the chief cause of the rising tide of red ink.

In a post on the official White House blog, acting Office of Management and Budget Director Jeffrey Zients said the slightly improved picture between February and July "reflects lower-than-expected spending, partially offset by lower-than-expected receipts."

Zients also fired a shot in the official Washington war over the "sequester"?automatic cuts to social programs and national security spending, adopted by Congress and signed by the president, and triggered by last year's failure to find a wide-ranging deficit-reduction plan?by saying lawmakers "can and must enact a comprehensive and balanced deficit reduction package" that would be "along the lines" of Obama's calls for higher taxes on the wealthy as well as "measures to strengthen the near-term economy and create jobs."

"With more than five months remaining before the sequestration must be initiated, Congress has ample time to act. The Administration stands ready to work with Congress to get the job done," he said.

Kristen Stewart, Katy Perry, Other Celebs Read Mean Tweets [Video]

There's never a good time to engage in an affair, but Kristen Stewart's romantic interlude with Rupert Sanders has really come at an unfortunate time for the actress.

She'll soon embark on a promotional tour for Breaking Dawn Part 2; boyfriend Robert Pattinson recently gave an interview in which he wondered why people cheat; and Jimmy Kimmel Live just ran a segment in which famous people read mean Tweets directed at them by the general public.

And, yes, Stewart is among those featured.

It's hilarious stuff all around - we especially enjoy the selected message shared by Katy Perry - but we somehow doubt Stewart would agree to do it again. Fan reaction to the star these days likely isn't anything to laugh at...

Scalia Unconcerned About Money in Politics; People Aren't 'Sheep'

In a television interview set to air on C-SPAN on Sunday, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia dismissed concerns today about there being too much money in politics.

"I forget what the figures are," he said, "but I think we spend less on our presidential campaigns each year when there is a presidential election than the country spends on cosmetics."

Asked about concerns regarding the amount of influence from corporations, Scalia said he thinks Americans are smarter than to be controlled by what they see on TV. "They're not sheep," he said.

"If you believe that we ought to go back to monarchy. That the people are such sheep that they just swallow whatever they see on television or read in the newspapers? No. The premise of democracy is that people are intelligent and can discern the true from the false. At least, when as the campaign laws require, you know who is speaking. You can't speak anonymously. You have to say, you have to identify the people that are giving the message."

Scalia made the comments to C-SPAN's Brian Lamb for an interview that will air this Sunday night at 8 p.m. ET on the cable network's Q and A program. Scalia is on a book tour for his new book Reading Law: the Interpretation of Legal Texts, which he wrote with coauthor Bryan A. Garner.

And while Scalia said he thinks C-SPAN would broadcast Supreme Court arguments in their entirety if the court were to allow cameras, the justice said he doesn't think Americans would be served by sound bytes of video they'd be more likely to see.

They'd pay attention to clips and not the entirety of arguments that the court deals with on things like patent reform and the IRS "?with all sorts of dull stuff that only a lawyer could understand and perhaps get interested," Scalia said. "If the American people saw all of that they would be educated. But they wouldn't see all of that. Your outfit would carry it all, to be sure, but what most of the American people would see would be 30 second, 15 second takeouts from our argument and those takeouts would not be characteristic of what we do. They would be uncharacteristic."

He agreed that newspapers quote decisions and opinions, but argued there is a difference where it comes to video.

"Somehow when you see it live, an excerpt pulled out of an entire, when you see it live, it has a much greater impact. No, I am sure it will mis-educate the American people, not educate," he said.

Scalia seemed to also be tiring of questions regarding leaks -sourced from within the court- that appeared in news stories in the days following the health care decision . Some outlets reported that Chief Justice John Roberts' decision to vote with the liberals to uphold the individual mandate under Congress' taxing power had caused a personal rift between Roberts and the other conservative justices.

Asked about the leaks, Scalia at first said, "I wouldn't talk about it?"

He later added that differences of opinion have not damaged relationships on the court.

"I've criticized the opinions of some of my colleagues and we have remained friends just as they have criticized my opinions and we have remained friends. Look, this is the kind of a job if you can't disagree, even disagree vehemently, on the law without taking it personally and without hating the person who's on the other side you ought to find another job. That's it," he said.

Last week Scalia was asked by CNN's s Piers Morgan, whether he had a a falling out with Justice Roberts. Scalia said the leaks were unreliable and said, "No, I haven't had a falling out with Justice Roberts."

In the C-SPAN interview Scalia also addressed complaints that he had gone outside the record in his dissent in the recent immigration case by addressing President Obama's announcement (made after the immigration case had been argued but before it was released) of a new program that allows some young undocumented immigrants who entered the US as children to stay in the country.

Scalia said he was "surprised" by the criticism which included a call from Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne Jr. t for him to resign.

"I was surprised that anyone would have thought that the purpose for which I used the President's statement - and did not criticize the President's statement, in fact I said it might be right," he said.
