Romney training manual for poll watchers causes stir

By Michael IsikoffNBC News

The Wisconsin agency that oversees elections is objecting to an internal training handbook distributed by Mitt Romney?s campaign that appears to instruct volunteer poll observers in the state to conceal their ties to the GOP candidate when they show up at polling stations on Election Day, a state official tells NBC News.

"Our plan is to contact the Romney campaign and tell them there are issues" with the material, said Reid Magney, a spokesman for the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board, which supervises elections in the state and enforces state election laws.

Magney said some of the training material -- obtained by the liberal Democratic blog Think Progress and posted on its website on Wednesday is either incomplete or misleading. The directive to observers, not to mention their connections to the Romney campaign, also conflicts with official Wisconsin Government Accountability Board guidance to all poll observers,? publicly posted on the agency's website, instructing that they sign in and? identify "the name of the organization or candidate the observer represents," he said.?

?We stand by our training materials, but we are always happy to answer any questions that the Government Accountability Board may have,? Ryan Williams, a spokesman for the Romney campaign, said in an email to NBC News.

A campaign official also noted that the Romney campaign has tangled with the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board's interpretation of election law on other matters. Just last week, the Romney campaign settled a lawsuit it filed against the board over military and overseas ballots, resulting in the state extending the deadline for those ballots to be returned.?

The Romney campaign document, which was specifically prepared for use in Wisconsin, gives detailed instructions to volunteer election observers, calling them "the first line of defense"? to insure a fair election and advising them to be on the lookout for voters who seek to cast ineligible ballots.

Under a section entitled "If you See Something, Say Something," it tells Romney campaign poll watchers to alert an official? Chief Election Inspector (CEI) at polling booths if they identify a potential voting irregularity. If the CEI does not "resolve it quickly," they should call "the Command Center," it says.

The training document? appears to instruct?observers to hide their ?connection to the Romney campaign from the election inspectors at polling booths. While the observers should introduce themselves to the inspectors, they should "sign in as a 'concerned citizen' and obtain a name tag," according to the document, which bears the official insignia of the Romney campaign and is entitled "Volunteer Observer Training."

The Think Progress blog also posted an audio recording it said it obtained from a Romney campaign training session in which Kristina Sesek, a lawyer for the Wisconsin Republican Party, states:? "We're going to have you sign in this election cycle as a 'concerned citizen.' We've just trying to alleviate some of the? animosity of being a Republican observer up front."

A senior Romney campaign official, who spoke with NBC News on condition of anonymity, said the directive advising that campaign poll watchers sign in as "concerned citizens" was inserted at the urging of the Wisconsin Republican Party because of recent incidents in which GOP poll watchers faced intimidation or threats at polling stations. The official said the directive was specific to Wisconsin and has not been repeated in Romney campaign? training material for poll watchers in other states.

But the official defended the language in the Wisconsin campaign document,? saying that signing in as a "concerned citizen" conforms to the "spirit" of Wisconsin law because the training material also instructs them not to interfere or communicate with voters seeking to cast their ballots.

The Romney campaign training handbook states that "we do not and will not tolerate any voter intimidation or suppression" and "No person should interfere with any indvidual's right to legally cast a ballot."

"There is nothing to prevent a concerned citizen from signing in as a concerned citizen," said the senior campaign official. "They're not talking to voters, they're not challenging somebody." The apparent conflict between the Romney campaign document and the official Wisconsin Government Accountability Board instructions to poll watchers to identify their campaign ties is a "distinction without a difference," the campaign official added.

Board spokesman Magney acknowledged the campaign document probably can?t be challenged as a legal matter. The official state guidance -- which explicitly states that poll watchers identify what campaign they are working for -- was issued under an emergency rule issued by the board in 2010. That rule has since expired and the board, swamped with other issues because of this year's Wisconsin recall votes,?hasn't had the opportunity to officially renew it. "It fell through the cracks," Magney said.

But he noted board's website states that it has directed local officials to "continue applying the? emergency rules" governing poll observers from 2010. Therefore, as far as the board is concerned, the directive that poll watchers identify themselves is still in effect, he said. He said this could be an issue in case there are post-election problems or disputes about challenges made by the poll watchers.

Magney said there were other problems with the training handbook, including its definition of ineligible voters--? whose ballots could be questioned -- as a "person who has been convicted of treason, a felony or bribery." Magney noted that under Wisconsin law, convicted felons who have served their sentences can have their civil rights restored and are eligible to vote.

The Romney campaign handbook also lists "The ONLY Acceptable Forms of 'Proof of Residency'" for voters -- and then mentions a number of items, such as current and valid drivers? licenses, photo identification cards from employers, real estate tax bills and college IDs. But Magney said the list is incomplete, failing to mention other forms of proof, including any communication from a government? agency, such as student loan documents or vehicle registration cards.

In defending the accuracy of the document, the Romney campaign official pointed to other pages of the training document. For example, the official said, on a later page, under a section titled "Cause for Challenge," the handbook instructs poll watchers that they may challenge? a voter if they have knowledge that he or she "is a felon who has not been restored his/her civil rights." And on another page, it states poll watchers looking to check the proof of residency of a voter can accept a "check or other document issued by a unit of government."

Anti-regime activists say Syrian regime kills 23 in Damascus suburb in airstrikes, clashes

BEIRUT - Airstrikes by Syrian jets and shells from tanks levelled a neighbourhood in a restive city near the capital of Damascus on Tuesday, killing 18 people, and at least five rebel fighters died nearby in clashes with regime troops, activists said.

The airstrikes on the city of Douma, northeast of the capital, left residents scampering over a huge expanse of rubble and using their hands to dig up mangled bodies, according to activist videos posted online.

Scenes of vast destruction like those from Douma on Tuesday have grown more common as rebels seeking to topple President Bashar Assad have made gains on the ground, and Assad's forces have responded with overwhelming air power.

In the past weeks, anti-regime activists say about 150 people have been killed a day in fighting. Since the uprising against Assad began in March 2011, they say 35,000 have died.

Tuesday's airstrikes came a day after what activists called the heaviest and most widespread bombing campaign nationwide on what was to be the final day of an internationally sanctioned truce that never took hold.

The death toll for what was supposed to be a four-day cease-fire ending Monday exceeded 500.

Activists speculated that the government's heavy reliance on air power reflected its inability to roll back rebel gains, especially in the north of the country near the border with Turkey, where rebels have control of swathes of territory.

The international community remains at a loss about how to stop the Syria violence. The U.S. and other Western and Arab nations have called on Assad to step down, while Russia, China and Iran continue to back him.

In the latest fighting after nightfall Tuesday, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 18 civilians were killed in an airstrike and tank fire Tuesday in the Hajariyeh neighbourhood in the suburb of Douma, northeast of Damascus.

The dead included four women and five children, the group said, adding that the toll could rise as residents were still searching through the rubble.

Five rebel fighters were also killed in clashes with regime forces elsewhere in Douma, the group said.

Amateur videos posted online showed a deep, rubble-filled crater in the middle of what appeared to be a poor neighbourhood, with many walls collapsed in the blast.

Men were seen chanting "God is great!" while pulling a mangled body from the rubble in one video. They used their hands to dig through cinder blocks and cement dust in another to uncover another dead body.

In yet another video, a man standing in the destruction yells at the camera, "These are the accomplishments of Lakhdar Brahimi," referring to the international envoy who proposed the recent, failed cease-fire.

Regime airstrikes also collapsed buildings in the rebel-held northern city of Maaret al-Numan, which straddles a key supply route from the capital to Aleppo, Syria's largest city and a main front in the civil war.

Assad's regime has been hammering away at Maaret al-Numan, 80 kilometres (50 miles) southwest of Aleppo, with heavy airstrikes since it fell to rebels on Oct. 10.

One amateur video purporting to show the aftermath of an airstrike on Tuesday showed a man holding up the dead body of a small girl in a red and white shirt and baby blue pants. Other videos showed men carrying bloodied women and children from destroyed buildings.

The Observatory said the day's airstrikes on the city killed at least seven people, four of them children.

One video showed the bodies of three girls wrapped in white shrouds. Nearby, a man dripped water on the face of a dead older man with a white beard, saying: "Go to heaven, dad. May God take revenge."

The Observatory said at least one rebel fighter was also killed in clashes south of the city, and regime forces were trying to bring in reinforcements from further south.

Activist claims and videos could not be independently verified because of restrictions on reporting in Syria, but the videos appeared genuine and corresponded with other Associated Press reporting on the events depicted.

Violence also flared elsewhere in and around Damascus. The Observatory said missiles fired from a fighter jet struck the capital's Jobar neighbourhood ? a rare hit in the capital's municipal area. Most of the fighting around Damascus for the past few months has been in suburbs and outskirts, where rebels have managed to challenge the regime.

Syria's state news agency said an "armed terrorist group" assassinated a high-ranking air force general. Maj. Gen. Abdullah Mahmoud al-Khalidi was gunned down while getting out of his car in the mostly Kurdish neighbourhood of Rukn Eddine in Damascus.

The government views the rebels as terrorists and accuses them of being foot soldiers in a foreign plot to destroy Syria.

In Turkey, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu expressed "great sadness" that the cease-fire had failed and said government was done talking to Assad's regime.

"Unfortunately the attacks continued, and the Syrian people spent the holidays suffering great pain," Davutoglu told reporters in Ankara. "There would be no meaning to forging a dialogue with a regime that pressed ahead with such a massacre even during the holidays."

Keep moving and have fun with interactive fitness system

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? People are moving less and less these days. Fraunhofer researchers have developed an interactive learning system that is supposed to motivate the user to move more but in a playful way: They have combined a sensor mat with an activity monitor. Children and adults can use the system to stay fit and learn at the same time. The highlight: The system records the intensity of the physical activity and immediately displays it.

Physical activity is extremely important- this applies equally to both young and old. People who exercise regularly are healthier, are rarely overweight and increase their power of concentration. Staying physically and mentally fit -- with the interactive learning system HOPSCOTCH every age group can do this easily and playfully. HOPSCOTCH consists of a sensor mat that is subdivided into nine fields, and each field has several letters and a number in it. The mat is connected to a monitor via a cable, and tasks from various fields of knowledge are displayed on the monitor. In order to complete the task the user presses on the fields of the sensor mat in the correct order and enters words or numbers. Dr. Martina Lucht, a media scientist at the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT in Ilmenau, came up with the idea for the mat when she saw a hopscotch grid drawn on the street.

Sensor records the intensity of physical activity

Lucht and her team worked closely with researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen to further develop HOPSCOTCH and added ActiSENS, a motion sensor that measures physical activity that was developed by Fraunhofer IIS. ActiSENS registers all of a person's movements, records their intensity and then rates them. The module determines whether the user simply tapped the fields with their foot or actually jumped and hopped on them. The feedback is displayed on the monitor in real time using five bars. ?It doesn't just matter whether or not the task was completed, but also how. ActiSENS tells the user whether or not they have moved enough," explains Martin Rulsch, a computer scientist at Fraunhofer IIS. ?The goal is to motivate the user to move more and have fun."

The small sensor is housed in a box that is hooked to the user's belt. The data is read in real time and transmitted via Bluetooth to a terminal device, such as a television. ?But a cell phone can also be used as an output device," says Rulsch. The data can also be saved to a flash memory and transmitted to a PC later to evaluate it.

The concept's possible areas of applications are varied: in schools it can be combined with language and gym classes -- this doesn't just benefit overweight or hyperactive children. Studies have shown that there is a growing number of students who can no longer perform simple tasks such as walking backwards or standing on one leg due to a lack of physical activity.

But older adults in rehab centers and retirement or nursing homes can also profit from the innovative movement concept that motivates people to move more in a lasting way. It can be used in parallel with physical therapy, for example to train muscles after operations. Since ActiSENS accurately calculates net movements and the level can be modified to the individual's endurance, which prevents it from over- or under-challenging the individual.

The researchers at Fraunhofer IIS and Fraunhofer IDMT will be presenting their system at the Medica 2012 trade fair in D?sseldorf from November 14-17 at the Fraunhofer joint booth in Hall 10, Booth F05.

Hurricane claims famous tall ship off NC coast

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) ? The final hours of the HMS Bounty were as dramatic as the Hollywood adventure films she starred in, with the crew abandoning ship in life rafts as their stately craft slowly went down in the immense waves churned up by Hurricane Sandy off the North Carolina coast.

By the time the first rescue helicopter arrived, all that was visible of the replica 18th-century sailing vessel was a strobe light atop the mighty ship's submerged masts. The roiling Atlantic Ocean had claimed the rest.

The Coast Guard rescued 14 crew members by helicopter Monday. Hours later, rescuers found one of the missing crew members, but she was unresponsive. And they were still searching for the captain.

"We pray there's no loss of life and that they rescue all of the crew," said Bill Foster, mayor of St. Petersburg, Fla., a frequent winter port for the ship and where it had been expected to arrive in November. "When a crew decides it's safer in an inflatable than it is on deck, then you know she's in peril."

The ship was originally built for the 1962 film "Mutiny on the Bounty" starring Marlon Brando, and it was featured in several other films over the years, including one of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.

The vessel left Connecticut on Thursday with a crew of 11 men and five women, ranging in age from 20 to 66. Everyone aboard knew the journey could be treacherous.

"This will be a tough voyage for Bounty," read a posting on the ship's Facebook page that showed a map of its coordinates and satellite images of the storm.

The Bounty's Facebook page reads like a ship's log of her activities, with many photos of the majestic vessel plying deep blue waters and the crew working in the rigging or keeping watch on the wood-planked deck.

As Sandy's massive size became more apparent, a post on Saturday tried to soothe any worried supporters: "Rest assured that the Bounty is safe and in very capable hands. Bounty's current voyage is a calculated decision ... NOT AT ALL ... irresponsible or with a lack of foresight as some have suggested. The fact of the matter is ... A SHIP IS SAFER AT SEA THAN IN PORT!"

But as the storm gathered strength, the Facebook posts grew grimmer. By mid-morning Monday, the last update was short and ominous: "Please bear with us ... There are so many conflicting stories going on now. We are waiting for some confirmation."

Tracie Simonin, director of the HMS Bounty Organization, said the ship tried to stay clear of Sandy's power.

"It was something that we and the captain of the ship were aware of," Simonin said.

Coast Guard video of the rescue showed crew members being loaded one by one into a basket before the basket was hoisted into the helicopter.

When they returned to the mainland, some were wrapped in blankets, still wearing the blazing red survival suits they put on to stay warm in the chilly waters.

"It's one of the biggest seas I've ever been in. It was huge out there," said Coast Guard rescue swimmer Randy Haba, who helped pluck four crew members off one of the canopied life rafts and a fifth who was bobbing alone in the waves.

A helicopter pilot said the waves appeared to be 30 feet high during the rescue. The Coast Guard said in a news release that waves in many places topped out around 18 feet.

The survivors received medical attention and were to be interviewed for a Coast Guard investigation. The Coast Guard did not make them available to reporters.

The crew member who was found unresponsive, 42-year-old Claudene Christian, was taken to a hospital in Elizabeth City, where she was listed in critical condition Monday evening.

The mother of another crew member, 20-year-old Anna Sprague, said her daughter had been aboard the HMS Bounty since May.

Mary Ellen Sprague, of Savannah, Ga., said she had spoken with her daughter twice but didn't know many details because her daughter, normally talkative and outgoing, was being uncharacteristically quiet.

"She's very upset," Sprague said by telephone.

Sprague said her daughter told her the ship's diesel engines failed, and then it started taking on water.

The crew was eager to return to St. Petersburg ? and to calmer waters.

"I know they were very much looking forward to being here," said Carol Everson, general manager of the pier where the vessel docks. "They were very excited about coming down."

The Bounty's captain, Robin Walbridge, was from St. Petersburg, she said.

Wallbridge learned to sail at age 10, according to his biography on the Bounty's website. Prior to the Bounty, he served as first mate on the H.M.S. Rose ? the Bounty's sister ship.

A man who answered the door at a home listed as being owned by the captain and his wife said: "Not a good time," and closed the door.

Foster said the city on Florida's Gulf Coast always considered itself the ship's home.

"We're feeling a real sense of loss as a community," he said. "We grew up with the Bounty."

Foster, who was raised in St. Petersburg, remembered the ship as a family tourist attraction along the waterfront in the 1960s and 1970s. He recalled replicas of caves, a history display and pirate-themed exhibits near the Bounty. As a teenager, he attended dances on the ship.

About 10 years ago, the ship underwent a multimillion-dollar restoration.

The ship generally travels in the spring and summer. In August, large crowds greeted it when sailing into St. Augustine, Fla., Savannah, Ga., and Charleston, S.C.

'Sinister' is made even spookier with its unnerving soundtrack

'Sinister' stars Ethan Hawke as a novelist who discovers a box of disturbing home movies.

By Rich Clabaugh,?Staff / October 30, 2012

The soundtrack for 'Sinister' was composed by Christopher Young, who also handled music duties on the horror film 'Drag Me to Hell.'

As a huge fan and collector of movie soundtrack and scores, I know what I am going to hear instrumentally: a finely tuned orchestra performing (hopefully) memorable music that conveys the mood and actions of the movie it's accompanying. However, the soundtrack to the movie "Sinister" totally breaks the mold, and I mean that in the best possible way.

The film, which stars Ethan Hawke and is currently in theaters, is about a true crime novelist (Hawke) who discovers a box of mysterious, disturbing home movies that plunge his family into a supernatural nightmare. The soundtrack is by composer Christopher Young, who has over 100 soundtracks to his credit, including "Spider-Man 3" and the horror film "Drag Me to Hell." Young explains in the CD?s liner notes that he usually uses an orchestra, but with "Sinister," he composes his first all-synth/sound-design-based score.

His score hits all the right notes (pun intended), creating a tense, unnerving atmosphere which is perfect for a horror film. The mood is struck immediately by the first track, "Portrait Of Mr. Boogie," and carries through to the end of the CD. Strange synthesizer noises combined with loud percussion and abrupt stops and starts means that one doesn?t know what to expect next. Track three, "Leventation," is my favorite ? with its distorted voices and whispers, it is some of the scariest music I have ever heard.

The CD, released by Var?se Sarabande, is out just in time for Halloween. This is a must-have for any horror fan and the perfect music to have playing in the background as you pass out candy to the costumed kids.?

Peanuts creator Charles Schulz made a habit of dispensing advice through the mouths of cartoon characters, especially the blanket-carrying Linus van Pelt.? GP2.jpg

?

Like any offering of counsel, some of it is to be heeded and some of it is not.

?

?There are three things you must never discuss with people,? the comic strip?s philosopher/theologian once said, ?religion, politics and the Great Pumpkin.?

?

Since we regularly wade into the first two topics anyway, we might as well go for broke and address the latter.

?

Sort of.

?

The traditions surrounding October 31st conjure up many good memories for me. Over the years, my wife and I have chosen to allow our sons to engage in the innocent and harmless side of Halloween. They enjoy dressing up in positive-themed costumes (Captain America, for example) and going trick-or-treating around the neighborhood.

?

I understand that Halloween is a hot topic with many Christians, and understandably so. With its admittedly pagan and creepy origins, involving druids, ghosts and goblins, many choose to either ignore it altogether or amend it in order to have it better complement their convictions.

?

I take no issue with either side and respect the strongly held perspectives in both camps. Halloween5.jpg

?

Instead, I want to address the broader culture concerning the holiday.

?

Here are my thoughts:

?

Christian or not, it is high time to turn away from the dark, gory and horror-filled side of the holiday. It?s always been time, but the confluence of culture and recent current events raises this matter to a new level.

?

There is absolutely nothing entertaining or redeeming about hatchet wielding villains parading in costume or front-lawn displays featuring blood spattered body parts.

?

Some might suggest I need to lighten up and relax, to not take intended fantasy so seriously.?

?

?It is all just a joke,? they say. ?It isn?t real.?

?

Or is it?

?

Those people who press will have to forgive me. My family and I live, pray and play in Colorado. Just a few days ago police arrested a 17-year-old for murdering and dismembering a ten-year-old girl. Parts of her body were reportedly found in the murderer?s house.

?

How can hearts break in two at such horrific news ? and yet grow indifferent to the site of a ghoulish Halloween display just blocks away? Halloween77.jpg

?

There is nothing ?fun? about a sinister-looking character, strapped from head to toe with plastic automatic rifles, casing the streets ? even with a bag full of candy in hand on Halloween night.

?

You?ll remember that it was earlier this summer that a young man, who allegedly called himself the ?Joker,? burst into a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, and opened-fire, injuring over 50 people and killing 13.

?

It seems that life is increasingly imitating ?art? these days ? but it?s too-often the heinous kind, not the glorious or good.

?

Evil has been on the loose since the beginning of time, and dispensing with evil-themed Halloween traditions won?t change the reality of a broken world.

?

I get it.

?

But can?t we agree that it?s unwise and unhealthy to embrace wickedness in any fictitious form?

?

As a culture we can find common ground with parents of every creed concerning the need to lift up the good and turn away from macabre traditions.?

(AP) ? Evoking harrowing memories of Hurricane Katrina, 300 patients were evacuated floor by floor from a premier hospital that lost generator power at the height of superstorm Sandy.

Rescuers and staff at New York University Langone Medical Center, some making 10 to 15 trips down darkened stairwells, began their mission Monday night, the youngest and sickest first, finishing about 15 hours later.

Among the first out were 20 babies in neonatal intensive care, some on battery-powered respirators.

"Everyone here is a hero," Dr. Bernard Birnbaum, a senior vice president at Tisch Hospital, the flagship at NYU, told exhausted crews as he released all but essential employees late Tuesday morning. "Thank you, thank you, thank you."

More than two dozen ambulances from around the city lined up around the lower Manhattan block to transport the sick to Mount Sinai Hospital, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, St. Luke's Hospital, New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Long Island Jewish Hospital.

Margaret Chu, 36, of Manhattan, gave birth to a son, Cole, shortly before noon Monday. "Then, a couple of hours later, things got a little hairy. The electricity started to flicker and the windows got shaky," she said from LIJ's Lenox Hill, where she was transported after generators failed and NYU was plunged into darkness.

Chu, accompanied by husband Gregory Prata, was able to walk 13 flights into a waiting ambulance with help from staff and first responders lighting the way by flashlight. She said other women who had given birth during the storm and were evacuated were carried down on sleigh-like gurneys.

"Everybody was pretty calm. I would call it organized chaos," she said.

Meanwhile, other New York hospitals canceled outpatient appointments and elective surgeries. And several closed and evacuated patients, including New York Downtown Hospital, a Manhattan campus of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System and other NYU-affiliated facilities. Bellevue and Coney Island Hospital were evacuating Tuesday afternoon.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg was clearly angry about the NYU Medical Center crisis when he addressed reporters late Monday, saying hospital officials had assured the city they had working backup power.

Last year, NYU evacuated in advance of Hurricane Irene on the order of city officials, spokeswoman Allison Clair said. "This year we were not told to evacuate by the city."

Without power, there are no elevators so patients ? some of whom were being treated for cancer and other serious illnesses ? were carefully carried down staircases. As the evacuation began, gusts of wind blew their blankets while nurses and other staff huddled around the sick on gurneys, some holding IVs and other equipment.

NYU did send home about 100 of its 400 patients earlier Monday to lighten its load, starting the evacuation of the remaining 300 patients at about 7:30 p.m. when backup generators began to fail, Clair said. There were no injuries during relocation.

The scene was reminiscent of hospital evacuations in New Orleans after Katrina, with patients being carried down stairs on stretchers because elevators were out, and nurses squeezing oxygen bags for them because of lack of power to run breathing machines.

The difference is that in New Orleans, patients were trapped in flooded hospitals; in New York, dozens of ambulances could get through to move patients to safety.

The hospital blamed the severity of Sandy and higher-than-expected storm surge that flooded its basement but had little else to say beyond a short statement emailed to reporters after the evacuation was complete.

"At this time, we are focusing on assessing the full extent of the storm's impact on all of our patient care, research and education facilities," the statement said.

Most of the power outages in lower Manhattan, where Tisch is located, were due to an explosion at an electrical substation, Consolidated Edison said. It wasn't clear whether flooding or flying debris caused the explosion, said John Miksad, senior vice president for electric operations at Con Edison.

At NYU, sporadic telephone service made it difficult for the hospital to notify relatives where patients were taken. It relied instead on receiving hospitals to notify families.

Until the generators failed, Chu considered herself and her new baby out of harm's way. By the time she was evacuated, the streets were eerily silent and the night sky lit up by emergency lights of waiting ambulances.

The Progressive Catholic Voice: Open Letter to Archbishop ...

The Progressive Catholic Voice's sharing of your open letters to Archbishop Nienstedt continues with the following letter by Patty Thorsen, who describes herself as "a Universalist by birth, a Christian through baptism, and a practicing Catholic by way of living." To learn more about this series and how to participate in it, click here.

Archbishop Nienstedt:

I am deeply disturbed by your appeal ? your campaign ? directed at me, fellow Catholics, and all Minnesota citizens to vote ?Yes? on the Marriage Amendment. Same-sex marriage is not an affront to the institution of marriage between a man and a woman, as your appeal implies.

Quite to the contrary. Same-sex marriage is an affirmation of the committed, loving relationships to which all individuals engaged in the institution of marriage ? homosexual and heterosexual ? are called.

Being Christian, I am ? we are ? called to live guided by three principles Christ articulated, ?faith, hope, and love, and the greatest of these is love.? Being Catholic, I am ? we are ? called to respect life. Respect for ? respect of ? life does not begin at conception, nor does it end at death. Being Catholic, I am ? we are ? called to respect all of life ? all committed, loving relationships between conception and death.

The Catholic Church I know and love blesses ? sanctifies ? committed, loving relationships. Be it through baptism, single life, vowed life, or married life, we are called to bless the living of all vocations ? not exclusive to sexual orientation. To proclaim otherwise compromises the very integrity of all vocations.

The Catholic Church I know and love is called to live the meaning of its name, ?catholic.? The Catholic Church I know and love is called to capitalize on the meaning of its name, ?catholic? ? universal.

We are called to be a universal church ? a catholic Catholic Church ? open to every individual without regard to sexual orientation.

Through Christ, we are called to be guided by faith, hope, and love. Through Christ, we are not called to exclude any individual from fully living their vocation ? from fully expressing their love.

It is beyond my conception to understand a basic question raised by your opposition to same-sex marriage. You say that same-sex marriage is a threat to the institution of marriage between a man and a woman. It is not. But, for the sake of argument, let?s say it is. I think we can both agree, marriage between a man and a woman is an expression of committed, loving relationship.

Same-sex couples called to marriage are called by the depth of their commitment ? the depth of their love.

Archbishop Nienstedt, enlighten me.

How is it that one couple united by their love of and commitment to one another can threaten another couple who is united by their love of and commitment to each other? How?

If same-sex marriage were to be a threat to the institution of marriage between a man and a woman, what does that say regarding the integrity of heterosexual marriage that you declare sacred through the sacrament of marriage?

Archbishop Nienstedt, that troubles me.

I am called to vote ?No? on the Marriage Amendment. I am called to celebrate the gifts brought forth when same-sex marriages ? expressions of committed, loving relationships ? are affirmed and treasured.

I invite you to join me in celebrating the gifts of individuals who are called to same-sex marriage. We need your leadership. Join me. Join others. It is not too late to vote ?No? on the Marriage Amendment.

May the peace of Christ be with you,

? Patty Thorsen

A Ray of Hope

Every day until the election, Slate will offer up one reason to be optimistic for your candidate.

Today?s Good News For Romney: Every realistic path to victory for Mitt Romney includes North Carolina?s 15 electoral votes; every realistic forecast of Hurricane Sandy involves it ripping through a swath of the Tar Heel State. And while the storm will keep both Democrats and Republicans indoors, Republicans have everything to gain from the resulting decrease in early voting. Democrats have already seized 49.5 percent of the early vote in the state, far outnumbering Republicans? 31.1 percent share. Obama has known all along that he?d have to rely on these early voters to have any shot of winning North Carolina. (He won it in 2008 with 14,000 votes, probably thanks to early voting.) Yet as the storm batters the state and shuts down early voting stations, Democrats are likely to lose much of their lead, as would-be early voters forego the dwindling opportunities to cast their ballots. North Carolina has hovered around a tie for much of the election, but Hurricane Sandy may have just delivered it for Romney.

Observatory: The Technique Behind an Archer Fish?s Powerful Attack

To capture their prey ? a spider or insect, often sitting on branches above the water ? archer fish spit out a powerful jet of water. The jet knocks the prey off and the fish race to capture their dinner.

?When the jet hits a solid surface you can hear a loud knock that?s very impressive because the fish are very small,? said Alberto Vailati, a physicist at the University of Milan.

Just how the fish generate a stream of water powerful enough to detach prey from vegetation has been a mystery. Now Dr. Vailati and his colleagues say the fish are able to modulate the velocity of the water coming out of their mouths. They increase the velocity over time and the water builds up as it is spit out in a continuous stream.

?You have this drop of water that progressively increases in size over time, and gets inflated,? Dr. Vailati said. This large drop of water is then able to hit and knock down prey with incredible force.

Dr. Vailati and his colleagues studied the fish, which are found in South and Southeast Asia, Australia and Polynesia, with a high-speed video camera. Previously, researchers had speculated that archer fish had some sort of special muscle in the mouth to enable the powerful jet of water. That hypothesis was disproved.

The technique used by the fish resembles something called water jet cutting, Dr. Vailati said, in which jets of water cut through metal. He and his colleagues report their findings in the current issue of the journal PLoS One.

Exoskeleton of advanced design promises new degree of independence for people with paraplegia

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? The dream of regaining the ability to stand up and walk has come closer to reality for people paralyzed below the waist who thought they would never take another step.

A team of engineers at Vanderbilt University's Center for Intelligent Mechatronics has developed a powered exoskeleton that enables people with severe spinal cord injuries to stand, walk, sit and climb stairs. Its light weight, compact size and modular design promise to provide users with an unprecedented degree of independence.

The university has several patents pending on the design and Parker Hannifin Corporation -- a global leader in motion and control technologies -- has signed an exclusive licensing agreement to develop a commercial version of the device, which it plans on introducing in 2014.

According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, somewhere between 236,000 to 327,000 people in the U.S. are living with serious spinal cord injuries. About 155,000 have paraplegia. The average age at injury is 41 and the estimated lifetime cost when it happens to a person of 50 ranges from $1.1 million to $2.5 million.

Until recently "wearable robots" were the stuff of science fiction. In the last 10 years, however, advances in robotics, microelectronics, battery and electric motor technologies advanced to the point where it has become practical to develop exoskeletons to aid people with disabilities. In fact, two companies -- Argo Medical Technologies Ltd. in Israel and Ekso Bionics in Berkeley, Calif. -- have developed products of this type and are marketing them in the U.S.

These devices act like an external skeleton. They strap in tightly around the torso. Rigid supports are strapped to the legs and extend from the hip to the knee and from the knee to the foot. The hip and knee joints are driven by computer-controlled electric motors powered by advanced batteries. Patients use the powered apparatus with walkers or forearm crutches to maintain their balance.

"You can think of our exoskeleton as a Segway with legs," said Michael Goldfarb, the H. Fort Flowers Chair in Mechanical Engineering and professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation. "If the person wearing it leans forward, he moves forward. If he leans back and holds that position for a few seconds, he sits down. When he is sitting down, if he leans forward and holds that position for a few seconds, then he stands up."

Goldfarb developed the system with funding from the National Institutes of Health and with the assistance of research engineer Don Truex, graduate students Hugo Quintero, Spencer Murray and Kevin Ha, and Ryan Farris, a former student who now works for Parker Hannifin.

"My kids have started calling me 'Ironman,'" said Brian Shaffer, who was completely paralyzed from the waist down in an automobile accident on Christmas night 2010. He has been testing the Vanderbilt apparatus at the Nashville-area satellite facility of the Shepherd Center. Based in Atlanta, Shepherd Center is one the leading hospitals for spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation in the U.S. and has provided the Vanderbilt engineers with the clinical feedback they need to develop the device.

"It's unbelievable to stand up again. It takes concentration to use it at first but, once you catch on, it's not that hard: The device does all the work. I don't expect that it will completely replace the wheelchair, but there are some situations, like walking your daughter down the aisle at her wedding or sitting in the bleachers watching your son play football, where it will be priceless," said Shaffer, who has two sons and two daughters.

"This is an extremely exciting new technology," said Clare Hartigan, a physical therapist at Shepherd Center who has worked with the Argo, Ekso and Vanderbilt devices. "All three models get people up and walking, which is fantastic."

According to Hartigan, just getting people out of their wheelchairs and getting their bodies upright regularly can pay major health dividends. People who must rely on a wheelchair to move around can develop serious problems with their urinary, respiratory, cardiovascular and digestive systems, as well as getting osteoporosis, pressure sores, blood clots and other afflictions associated with lack of mobility. The risk for developing these conditions can be reduced considerably by regularly standing, moving and exercising their lower limbs.

The Vanderbilt design has some unique characteristics that have led Hartigan and her colleagues at Shepherd Center to conclude that it has the most promise as a rehabilitative and home device.

None of the exoskeletons have been approved yet for home use. But the Vanderbilt design has some intrinsic advantages. It has a modular design and is lighter and slimmer than the competition. As a result, it can provide its users with an unprecedented degree of independence. Users will be able to transport the compact device on the back of their wheelchair. When they reach a location where they want to walk, they will be able to put on the exoskeleton by themselves without getting out of the wheelchair. When they are done walking, they can sit back down in the same chair and take the device off or keep it on and propel the wheelchair to their next destination.

The Vanderbilt exoskeleton weighs about 27 pounds, nearly half the weight of the other models that weigh around 45 pounds. The other models are also bulkier so most users wearing them cannot fit into a standard-sized wheelchair.

From a rehabilitation perspective the Vanderbilt design also has two potential advantages, Hartigan pointed out:

? The amount of robotic assistance adjusts automatically for users who have some muscle control in their legs. This allows them to use their own muscles while walking. When a user is totally paralyzed, the device does all the work. The other designs provide all the power all of the time.

? It is the only wearable robot that incorporates a proven rehabilitation technology called functional electrical stimulation. FES applies small electrical pulses to paralyzed muscles, causing them to contract and relax. FES can improve strength in the legs of people with incomplete paraplegia. For complete paraplegics, FES can improve circulation, change bone density and reduce muscle atrophy.

There is also the matter of cost. The price tags of other rehabilitation model exoskeletons have been reported to be as high as $140,000 apiece, plus a hefty annual service fee. Parker Hannifin hasn't set a price for the Vanderbilt exoskeleton, but Goldfarb is hopeful that its minimalist design combined with Parker Hannifin's manufacturing capability will translate into a more affordable product. "It would be wonderful if we could get the price down to a level where individuals could afford them and insurance companies would cover them," he said.

Meanwhile, Hartigan has advice for potential users: "These new devices for walking are here and they are getting better and better. However, a person has to be physically fit to use them. They have to keep their weight below 220 pounds, develop adequate upper body strength to use a walker or forearm crutches and maintain flexibility in their shoulder, hip, knee and ankle joints ... which is not that easy when a person has relied on a wheelchair for months or even years."

The research was funded by a grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development numbered R01HD059832.

US, Japan troops to hold drill amid China tensions

Japan and the United States will hold a biennial joint military exercise in Japan in November in a move likely to further anger China amid heightened tensions between the two Asian giants over disputed islets in the East China Sea.

About 37,400 military personnel from Japan will join some 10,000 U.S. troops in the November 5-16 drill, an official at Japan's Self-Defense Forces said.

China's Defence Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun said last week China was "paying close attention to the relevant moves by the Japanese", when asked about a joint military exercise between the United States and Japan.

Yang also accused Japan of "manufacturing tensions in the region".

In recent weeks, both Japan and China have sent patrol ships to waters near the uninhabited islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, raising concerns that an unintended collision could develop into a larger clash.

Much at stake for US as tensions rise in troubled China Seas

Officials from Japan and China held talks earlier this month in Shanghai to discuss the dispute.

Chinese ships have been frequenting waters near the islands, also claimed by Taiwan, since Japan's government nationalized them last month, a decision that sparked violent demonstrations across China.

China vs. Japan, but the loser could be the global economy

Japanese air force officials, meanwhile, say there has also been a spike recently in Chinese air operations resulting in emergency "scrambles" by Japanese fighter jets to keep them from entering Japan's airspace.

According to statistics released by the Defense Ministry, fighters were dispatched 54 times between July and September in response to possible incursions of Japanese airspace by Chinese warplanes. That was up sharply from the three previous months, before the tensions heightened, when there were 15 such scrambles.

A ministry official said virtually all of the incidents were in airspace over the East China Sea.

Both countries have been flexing their military muscles to bolster their claims to the islands, which are strategically located and surrounded by rich fishing grounds, along with potentially lucrative reserves of undersea natural resources.

Hurricane Sandy Viral Photos ? For Better or For Worse, What You ...

Just like all of you, I spend a sizeable portion of my day with Facebook open in one of the many tabs of my Google Chrome browser. I do it for work; other typical explanations include social media addiction, boredom, or a bad case of the Mondays. Either way, I?m confident that a great majority of people that spent any time on social media on Monday caught a great deal of images, comments, posts, updates, and tweets related to Hurricane Sandy.

Among all the hullabaloo there were several images that began to circulate rather quickly, including an inundated Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and various New York City skylines cowering under ominous-looking masses of cloud. As it turns out, most of these images are fake. Not fake as in they never happened fake ? fake as in, those photos had nothing to do with Hurricane Sandy fake.

Amazing, inspiring, fake photos.

This image was actually a normal picture of the Statue of Liberty, Photoshopped against the background of a 2004 Nebraska storm.

People share viral pieces for different reasons. We?ve all had the ?Oh, you haven?t seen _______ yet? You have to check it out!? conversation. The very point of social media is to share compelling content with our friends (both literal and metaphorical), and that won?t change. But with the sensationalistic and incorrect information that gains legs during this kind of huge story, how do users start shaking out the details? More importantly, does a willingness to instantly share a doctored photo reflect poorly on your own (or, Heaven forbid, your business?s) credibility?

It wasn?t long after the first round of photos circulated through the interwebs that articles began to identify these photos as the phonies that they were. I?ll be honest?? I saw some of the photos on my own feed and thought they were fantastic. It didn?t even cross my mind that they were fake.

This image was taken from the poster for the 2004 environmental disaster film The Day After Tomorrow.

Here?s where the social Internet?s famed capacity for instantaneous reaction kicks in and things get interesting. Those who resisted the allure of the initial photo insta-share were all too happy to spread the damning info, and those who initially shared the photos suffered the e-stigma of falling for a hoax ??followers of the accounts who spread the tainted photos are surely feeling exasperated at their friends? willingness to hop on the bandwagon. As in the Kony 2012 debacle, sensationalistic content is tempting to share, but if it turns out to be false your followers may have a real problem with your willingness to mislead them. Love it or hate it, the Internet is a breeding ground for high-speed rumor-mongering, but we?re now also allowed high-speed debunking ? which can lead to a crucial loss of credibility in your networks.

Does the question of journalistic responsibility come into play with regard to such a disconnected network as the social media sphere? Can we just assume that eventually the truth will prevail? The actual source often becomes so removed from the images that go viral that it?s hard to tell what?s what. Some will always be quick to share, and others quick to skepticism. While news stories of this magnitude offer an unparalleled opportunity for organic, viral sharing, it?s important to remember that the Internet?s capacity for tweaking or losing the truth entirely is mighty ? if you try to harness the power of a breaking news story, pay attention to your sources or you may find yourself losing social (media) capital.

What fake viral media has affected you recently? Have you found yourself unwittingly sharing a less-than-veritable tidbit, and what were your followers? reactions?

Mitt Romney, First Lady Stump for Votes in Swing State Iowa

The Washington Post reported Monday that Mitt Romney campaigned in Davenport, Iowa, where he told a crowd that he was optimistic about America's future. He said, "I wouldn't be doing what I've been doing if I were a pessimist, all right? This job is quite an undertaking. It's a thrill to get to do what I get to do."

Here are some of the latest developments from the Hawkeye State. Iowa's six electoral votes are being sought by both presidential campaigns.

* First Lady Michelle Obama campaigned in Iowa City, Iowa, Monday, where she discussed Hurricane Sandy. She said that President Barack Obama "has made this storm his priority, and he is going to do whatever it takes to make sure the American people are safe and secure," according to CNN Monday.

* The Associated Press reported Sunday that Vice President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit Fort Dodge, Iowa, Thursday.

* Iowa is one of three swing states, along with Wisconsin and Ohio, where GOP supporters have up to a 3-to-2 advantage in local TV ad spending, according tot The New York Times Sunday.

* Real Clear Politics' latest cumulative averaging of polls shows that Obama leads Romney in Iowa by 2.3 points, 49 percent to 46.7 percent (through Monday night).

* Bloomberg News reported Monday that through Oct. 27, the secretary of state's office reported that more than 470,000 early votes have been cast by Iowans, which would be 30 percent of the amount of Iowans who voted four years ago. Democrats lead currently with 44.6 percent of the votes cast, while Republicans have cast 32 percent of the early votes. Independents currently make up 23.3 percent of the early votes.

* The Hill reported Sunday that Stephanie Cutter, Obama's deputy campaign manager, deemed the Des Moines Register's endorsement of Mitt Romney as not "based at all in reality" on "This Week." She added "It says that he'd reach across the aisle, which he'd do the exact opposite. It's the exact opposite of what he did in Massachusetts."

* Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad's communication director, Tim Albrecht, deemed the Des Moines Register's endorsement for Romney as one that "will send absolute shockwaves through this race," as reported by The Washington Post's Right Turn Monday.

Why, NMVT Can Help You Change Your Mindset In Network ...

In today?s blog I want to discuss with you why I believe NMVT can really help you change your mindset in Network Marketing. ?

nmvt Let me begin by explaining my own failures that I have had in the past with building a business, online or offline. You see, I like you, have failed miserably in the direct sales industry. Primarily I?ll blame it on myself, after all we are responsible for the results we get, as it is our own businesses that we are working and not someone working them for us. My old mindset was it?s my business, are you going to build it for me. Perhaps you can relate to that in your current situation, maybe not, however we all know that 97% of all who join a home based business end up failing and getting a nasty taste in their mouths about the industry.

As I sit here at my kitchen table working on my macbook pro and drinking a starbucks coffee, millions of thoughts are mulling through my mind about the past and failures I?ve had, not having the proper mindset is one of the biggest reasons for failure. It wasn?t that I was not working, because I did. I worked hard, talking to all nmvtmy friends and family about how I was going to get rich, and drive a Bentley, etc. Well, when that never happened after 6 months and so I thought, and there is that word, ?thought? that it was over! You may have experienced the same thing, you thought that you were going to get rich in a few short months after getting in your new business, but that is a big fat lie. You see, having the right mindset would have prevented you from thinking that way. It takes time to build a business the right way. So having the wrong mindset is worse than one of your friends saying no, when your mind is right, no doesn?t matter, you?ll keep on fighting for your dreams even if it takes you a 100 years. NMTV offers some of the best training I?ve ever seen in the Network Marketing Industry. In fact, I?ve yet to find anything that comes close to what is offered inside of Network Marketing VT?

High Web Hosting Services | Healthuse - Health & Fitness Tips

For those who imagined all people billions of websites are hosted on
really expensive and extensive support world wide web internet hosting services, it?s good to
cross examine your content resources once more. In fact, you can get
absolutely free or low-budget internet internet hosting businesses that supply important functionality
positive plenty of for easy html webpages. You might consider the instance of
some web page web-sites for these. But reasonably priced (as discounted as $1.ninety nine per month)
word wide web internet hosting assistance differs because they state to deliver greater than
the essential elements which demand immense infrastructures and cash to
preserve and continue being within the opportunity. How do low-budget website internet hosting
organizations catch the attention of home business and what exactly are their tips?

Trick Quantity one: The 24/7 toll-free variety that an inexpensive online
internet hosting corporation will market on their web-site. A lot of these
seldom show results and people that do give good results look to operate only Monday to
Friday. There?re there chiefly to generate a bogus perception. What
will you need to do for the weekend or just after several hours? You?ll need a net
internet hosting business that gives true help.

Trick Variety two: E-mail contacts granted, which provide you with an awfully properly
worded (automobile responder) reaction, requesting you to generally be affected person
though promising that an correct online internet hosting government is
managing your question. You should not you must converse into a legitimate particular person at
some place? E-mail messages could go on without end without any
resolution in sight. Your time and effort, in a nutshell offer, is worthwhile.

Trick Selection three: Endless e-mail in POP3 and SMTP which barely
give any benefit into a compact webmaster but might have a giant influence on
your determination producing. Bargain web site internet hosting merchants is unable to
supply reputable e mail provider. Nevertheless, you would like nice e-mail provider so
that you just can continue to be in speak to along with your potential customers. (more effective
service=more customers=more income)

Trick Amount four: Low priced word wide web internet hosting enterprises sometimes make
claims of complimentary downloads value numerous pounds. You can easily
test this present only immediately after you subscribe to their program. You
could be in a position to pay a visit to all elements of the offer you before you make a
determination, consequently conserving you worthwhile time and cash.

Trick Range five: The lure of freebies like all system database
assist, preinstalled server facet scripts, blog builders, templates
and SSL & ecommerce tools. In actuality, if these products are
provided by reasonably priced internet internet hosting vendors, they are really surprisingly limited.
Why limit your organization from the start? You will need a world wide web internet hosting
enterprise that will offer you the tools you?ll have to be successful
right out of the gate!

Trick Multitude 6: Domain registrars and sister services of low priced
net internet hosting corporations will not allow editing DNS zone files and MX
records. Registrars speak about ?name server management? when
they actually mean the exact opposite resulting in forced internet hosting
with them. You ought to be ready to choose the services which you
want for your internet marketing business. Right after all, who knows your small business superior
than you? Locking yourself in with an inexpensive online internet hosting business enterprise
forces you to do internet business their way. Will not do it!

Trick Quantity seven: Artificially populating user forums is another way of
promoting their low priced net internet hosting organisation. Low-priced world wide web internet hosting
institutions do this so you will think they have tons of satisfied
users. Really, you will need to rely on referrals to pay a visit to an online
internet hosting company?s services. This is the only realistic way to get sure
you?ll get the assistance you deserve.
Trick Quantity 8: Display of the unknown or little known award and
trying to impress you that they present award winning support. Do
awards mean anything anymore these days? Far better to rely on
actual comments from authentic users.

Trick Multitude 9: Offering absolutely free integration of shopping carts and
payment gateways. Cheaper word wide web internet hosting businesses do this
because they know that for many online businesses having access
to an online payment tool is a must. What you actually get is
PayPal, which is well known, and is not their product at all. Why
would you trust an internet internet hosting business enterprise that would do this?

Trick Selection 10: Totally free Marketing assistance. Needless to say they do it but
what they market vigorously is their resource site where your name might
be mentioned. Less costly world wide web internet hosting organizations will not do increased
than this. In fact, they could not. Are you paying for marketing your
online business? Or theirs?

Being within the lookout for tips such as these will keep you from
falling into the trap of thinking that less expensive online internet hosting is decent.
You possibly can make a more suitable choice for your organization. You?ll need a website
internet hosting agency that gives realistic, complete services that help
